Springs and retainers are NOT needed for S4/S4HL cams

Right. S4 and S4 HL cams are a total drop-in. As long as you're not going much over 7,500.

Yea, I'd consider some S4, but not interested in the HL for my setup. Still would rather have S3, lots of great experience from the RWD guys, who do road racing and drifting. We spend a lot of time at or near the limiter.

If you spend a lot of time near or at the limiter, then I don't see why you'd be considering S3 cams, as they really only help in the low and near mid range. Unless of course it is a cost thing.

And just for your information, the S4 cams were the original release spec for those cams. The S4 HL (High Lift) cams are the S4 cams but with a little more lift or whatever, and they are a direct replacement for the S4 cams. What I mean is, they are version # 2 of the S4 cams and they superseded the S4 cams in JWT's catalog. JWT does not sell S4 cams anymore, because the S4 HL cams were determined to be better in every way by a slight margin. Better area under the curve, and the same stock springs can handle them to the same safe RPM. It was really just a minor change in lift that they felt should have been in the S4 cam to begin with.

Good luck in your search. Just trying to help you in your decision.

Any adjustable cam gear plans? I have S3's on my turbo'd B13 with JWT cam gears with the exh. advanced 2.5* and int. retarded 2.5* for more overlap...although it's seen more time on jackstands than the street in the last 5yrs.

Nah, I plan on running oem cam gears. This is an all out street car, don't really want to fuck with too much stuff. Think Nissan did a good job with the engine design, I just want a bit more aggressive than stock. Reliability and simplicity is key for me!

Thanks for the info Ben, I had not realized that. I still think the s4 series is a bit more aggressive than I want. Everything I've read about the s3, especially with RWD cars doing what I do, at the same tracks and stuff, they all point towards s3, and that's ok with me. I'm not trying to squeeze every possible horsepower out of it as I can, I just want a bit more grunt and open it up a bit more than stock. I'm all about precision reliability and simplicity, KISS.

Thanks for the advice and warm welcome. I'll see if I can dig up some more pics.

Oh I don't doubt it, and for some people they are great. I have JWT ECU for a reason, because its a good clean tune, and I don't have to mess with it lol. I don't like having anymore adjustability than I have to. Cause honestly, I don't trust myself to make safe adjustments that would be worth it. I don't doubt that they could be a great feature, and I do appreciate the suggestion, but for what I am doing, and what I want. The non adjustable oem cam gears will do just fine for me. Thanks though man, good looking out!
