Thread: MD Smog Test Prospects....

I'm considering buying this car (http://www.sr20-forum.com/cars/40679-fs-1999-g20t-turbo-w-6speed-swap-atl-6000-a.html) but have no experience with a turbo swap and emissions testing in MD. Note that there are 2 possible ECUs -- I'm guessing that the OBDII option would be the way to go for smog testing. Can anyone share some insights on what I might be getting into?

Have to have obd2 ecu, you can have 2 emission not ready and still pass smog. After 01 you can only have 1. The main problem with that car for smog would be egr, rear o2 and the crank sensor. Egr and rear o2 is easy. The crank sensor you would have to drill a hole into the bellhousing.

Unless you know someone in Cumberland, use there address cause there's no emission test up there.

Whud up Bill. I passed when my B14 was boosted with the 54c motor/jwt ecu. The key is finding out if there is an engine light for the rear 02 sensor, if not what method was used to remove it. Does the car have a good cat? Is the ECU adjustable to get your tune proper for emmisions and or can you temporarily hook up the EGR system if it has been removed.

For OBDII cars in MD, my understanding is that there is no tailpipe test, they just hook up a scanner to the OBD port. (That's what hey did to my Maxima) Would this be correct for the G20 that we are looking at?

Assuming so, then what Keo is talking about is the question of what is needed to pass the scan. According to new posts in the sales thread, there are 2 CELs that are showing with OBDII - CPS and rear O2 sensor. I could install a rear O2 sensor or resistor without much trouble to remove one of the CELs. Can you tell me any more about installing a Crank Position Sensor (CPS)? Would it be obvious exactly where to drill the hole, for example?

Hahaha Thanks man It's been a while since the 200 has been checked but they did both when I had the 54c in. I will check with Paul to verify which test is done now. As fas the CPS, there is an indention on the trans where you drill for the sensor and 10mm bolt.
