Thread: Speed Camera's now legal in MD

By law, they are required to post that Speed Cameras and Red Light Cameras are in use.

Radar detectors will indeed pick them up, but the problem is that it may be too late when the radar detector goes off. For instance, when driving thru North Carolina for the convention, my radar detector would go ape **** as I got closer to an overpass that had a radar gun mounted under it. They would POP KA and hit you out of nowhere.

Hopefully they don't do the same thing. My guess is that it'd be a continual KA band to monitor traffic. Off to do some research.

EDIT: After some quick reading, radar detectors may NOT detect them. Some areas use Peizo Electric devices sewn into the pavement, and these devices record the speed in which a car passes over them. If the calculated speed is over the speed limit, the cameras are triggered.

Other areas likely use constant on KA band radar to monitor the vehicle's speed over a period of time, which is good for those of us with a radar detector that's worth it's weight in gold. I can see it LOOOONG before I'm in the range of KA being bounced back.

Typically, in some areas around here, there are police sitting after the speed camera's, as people tend to speed up when they get by them...

The local (neighborhood) speed camera's use the devices sewn into the pavement.

Typically, like in DC, the other speed camera's are in mobile stations (which is listed for the highway speed camera's) which most likely is radar detectable.

My local test track. It's really not that big of a deal to me. You aren ticketed till you go 12 over the speed limit and there really isn't a reason to drive that fast on most roads. Eveyone knows where the cameras are so slow down

I disagree with the court part. I got one in DC and took it to court where I was promptly told by the judge that they were 100% irrefutable due to their "thorough" review process of the evidence before mailing a fine out to the driver.

Mobile camera are the mini van with really really dark tints that have a small sign on them. maryland had them for awhile now and I know of a few spots already.

I used to work for a company called Nestor Traffic. They were bought up by another company. I did mobile speed enforcement with the cameras in East Cleveland.

We used to enforce at 3 over in school zones and 7 over in regular zones. GMC savannah vans, all black windows. Antenna for wireless connection on top of the van. Usually work on a cycle of locations and only hit certain areas every few days or so.

There are a few ways people used to beat the tickets:

If the time on the photo is inaccurate and you can prove it (store receipt, work hours, etc)

If the lighting on the photo in some way obstructs license plate or make/model of the car.

If the location information isnt properly input for enforcement. (Street name spelled wrong)

If the Reticle is on multiple vehicles in the photo. Reticle being the grid like focus of the camera itself that it stamps onto the photo showing the target of the camera. Ours had a red box that focused on the offending vehicle. If it so much as has one corner of the box touching another vehicle you can fight it and get it thrown out.



Now most of these ways out are caught by the processing department of the company and they usually dispose of those citations because they know they can be beaten in court. Best of luck to you MD guys. Basically every suburb of Cleveland refuses to get them
