Also, the new headliner material has the foam backing built into it.

Like this...

...and I also recently purchased some black suede headliner from eBay but have yet to install it.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Yep, that's the roll of replacement I got. Below is an image of the three layers of the headboard I seem to have. Dark grey is the old foam (fabric of headliner already removed), light grey insulation like thing, and then the headliner itself. I hope I am supposed to remove the light grey portion like I started to! But it seems like nobody is bothering to replace that part.

That's weird. It almost looks like maybe another headliner was put on top of an old one? What car is the headliner from?

The foam backing (dark in your pic) was glued right to the carboard on my headliner...

To better answer your question, YES, all that stuff needs to come off so you have a clean, smooth piece of cardboard left.

Brilliant. Off it comes. Headliner is from a 91 SE-R with moonroof. I've owned the car since 36k miles, so I am pretty sure the headliner is OEM. In your closeup pic, I can see the little strands of that insulation-like layer, mine just appears to be peeling away differently. Thank you for the prompt replies!

Do it! Then you can make a thread about it. Does Eastwood sell a Home Flocking Kit? ...that would be cool
