How to: Reset Odometer / Remove speedo-needle
So, you've got a new low mileage JDM engine and after installing it, found out you didn't get a new cluster with it. That means the odometer reads a few K miles wrong...
Here's a quick how to
Disclaimer: Don't do anything illegal. Tampering with the odometer is illegal, and this guide only applies if you've changed out the cluster and want to get the mileage right.
This guide is also great when replacing the gauges with white ones/repainting the needles/attaching leds under the needles etc. I won't be going trough the other needles, cause they are a %/#( to get right. Do this only if youre willing to risk your cluster.
Start by removing the entire assembly as usual. Remove the clear plastic to expose the gauges.
Undo the 4 screws on the back of the speedometer
Lift out the entire assembly
Familiarise yourself with the design, and handle it gently
This is the gear that turns the odometer backwards.
Take a pair of pliers and remove the small plastic that stops the needle from going below zero. This will release the strain on the needle.
The needle should now be pointing at the text at the bottom
Take a large flathead screwdriver and twist up the needle. Guide it with your fingers so it doesn't snap. This is the hardest bit
It should pop off if you apply enough even force. It might also break :S BE CAREFUL
This is the mechanism to dial in the wanted mileage
After a few turns we have gone back 200km. This is a long process, so you can place it at your computer and turn it from time to time if you have alot of adjusting to go
Assembly is the same procedure backwards. Don't push the needles to hard down, or they will start sticking. Assemble the needle at the lower than lowest position (picture no 7).
