Thread: How to remove window tint

there are several ways to remove bad or old window tint, I'm going to show you how I remove the film and adhesive.

my first choice to remove window tint is by using a steamer, how ever this Does Not work on all films, those films will be addressed shortly.

apply direct steam to the film's surface and slowly pull film evenly while keeping the steam a few inches in front of your pull.


1st method for rear glass, tools needed, steamer, white scrub pads, soapy solution in a pump bottle. the white scrub pads are needed for minor scrubbing on any glue left behind.

by doing this you will have a 99% chance of saving your defrost lines.

second method for rear glass, this is called the "bag method" , cover up or remove and panels or seats just to be safe, spray straight Ammonia (do not dilute)directly on the film itself and place a Black trash bag on the inside and let the car sit in the direct sun light for about 30 min, check to see if the adhesive is ready to come off with film, if not just repeat step 1 by spraying film again and spreading the Black trash bag back on the film. reason for not diluting is the weaker you make it the less it works!

roll downs without steamer, simply pull film down and let it hang over the door panel to help contain the glue mess that comes with removing it. spray the exposed adhesive with soapy solution and scrape it off with a razor blade, this may require several razor blades to finish the job (usually 2-4).. remember this!! when the razor blade becomes dull it will scratch the glass if you don't use a new one!

my soapy solution of choice is baby shampoo and water, don't need anything stronger!

iv used the plastic bag method...........and its extremely effective. but i diluted the ammonia with water and then put it in a spray bottle. also, spray the outside of your rear glass with water and put the trash bag on the outside, then cut it out so it fits the window.......it helps alot when putting it on the inside of the window. and use a high quality black trash bag, the type you cant see threw as it will get the window hotter and trap more heat
