Thanks for this write up! Really helped a lot. But Instead of getting new sockets, I just took the wire from the Same wled-5 bulbs you got and bent it around the OEM socket like the previous lights were. Worked like a charm.

So I did this today. But, slightly different.

After fumbling around with the speedometer cable for a good half hour, with my hands/neck/shoulder aching, I finally said the hell with it and pulled on the dash cluster and was able to reach around just enough to replace the bulb on the tachometer side. It works.

I also noticed that now the speedometer is acting more schizophrenic while driving (moving up and down up and down up and down) which I assume is because of all the pulling on it. Also, I must not have noticed, or hit something, but the little digital clock is no longer lighting up. It works and keeps time, you just can't see it at night.

Speaking of the speedometer, anyone know why the jumping speedometer cable is such a common problem in these cars?

the speedometer cable is crimped onto the end that fits the top of the pinion gear. when it gets loose or brakes, the revolutions no longer are 1:1 and it catches then releases making the needle go up and down. replace the cable, or braze the 2 pieces together.
