SR16/18/20 Long Block Component Weights
In this thread you will find the part numbers and weights of some of the OEM components of the SR20 long block (short block and cylinder head. I will also do my best to try and include some weights for common aftermarket long block components, such as crankshafts, connecting rods, pistons, valve spring retainers, etc.

This information could be valuable for engine rebuilds where components such as pistons, connecting rods or crankshafts might be swapped. This information could also be valuable for machine shops who might be externally balancing your crankshaft to the opposing components it is meant to counter balance, such as piston, pin, conrod, bushing etc. One might also use these values when deciding how much weight to remove form a counterweight during the knife-edging process.

Feel free to enquire about the weight of a specific component I have not listed.

All weights come directly from Nissan and are related to the specific part number listed. This thread is not meant to try and discredit any weights that Nissan has listed for each particular component; It is merely a reference tool. I will, however, gladly add real-world weight measurements from forum members who have weighed a specific part. This will provide a contrast to what Nissan lists as the weight of a particular part vs. the actual weight of the part in your engine (as measured by the referenced member).

Note: All pistons/bearings are Standard Grade 1 unless otherwise listed.

Note: Piston weight includes piston pin and snap ring.

Note: All indicated chassis codes are USDM unless otherwise listed.

Note: Engines included in this list will be SR20DE, SRXXDET, SR20DT, SRXXVE and SR20VET.

Note: Real world weight measurements will be listed in parenthesis after the Nissan weight, with credit to the appropriate member.

** This thread is a work in progress. There is plenty more information to come. I still have the conrod bearings, piston rings (set), flywheel and crank pulley weights to post up. I also have other variations of the DET to add to the list. As well as some other interesting information.

That's interesting that the DE rod is heavier than the DET rod. Also that the later 8CW crank in B14s is lighter than the earlier 8CW cranks.

A 54C DET rod is the heaviest from factory. All of these numbers are going to deviate a little bit.

In the set of rods I pulled out of my GTi-R engine, there was a difference of (714.5g, 714.7g, 712.6g, and 713.6g which gives a mean weight for each rod of 713.85g)

GTi-R crank rang in at 38.3 lbs all five times I weighed it on an accurate bathroom scale I have owned for about two years now.

Thanks for the measurement. Added to the 1st post.

Is there any chance in the future that you can get the crankshaft weighed at a postal facility or similar place? From my knowledge, bathroom scales are more for measuring weight change from day to day as opposed to measuring a precise weight at any given instance. Newer digital scales are considerably better than older dial scales but even digital bathroom sclaes (when fine-tuned) are generally considered to be anywhere from +/- 0.5 lbs. out of range as far as giving an accurate weight. They are however (when working well) capable of giving consistent weights from day to day, albeit not necessarily the exact weight. Given a variance of +/- 0.5 lbs. from the actual weight, your weight of 38.3 lbs. for the GTi-R crankshaft is equal to appx. 37.8 lbs, which is quite close to Nissan's weight listing of 37.7 lbs.

Nissan's weights are also precise down to singular grams.

Keep the real-world weights coming, though! Thanks for the contrast!

I decided to combine weights for the ENTIRE long block as opposed to having seperate threads for the short block and the cylinder head. I have broken everything down into individual sections and added an aftermarket parts section as well. Hopefully people will chime in with their aftermarket weight measurements.

Lots of additional information added. Plenty more to come.

Thanks!

If the postal office thinks the crankshaft is a weapon, I may be in some trouble.....but I will try it one day in the name of science.

B15NEOVVL, you might want to add the SR16 N1 A2010-1N521 piston weight to the list.

Grade 2

Piston + pin = 433.75 grams/ .9563 pound

Measured on the post office scale.
