Ashton, NGK offer an 8 series copper plug, I've ran this plug on my s13.

Basically, if you didn't have spark blow-out before and are not going to insane RPM, I would use a Mallory Single Channel CDI box, as you can get one for like 150. If you begin to blow out, these have a very good re-sale value as all the V8 guys want them.

Ben,

You shouldn't try to get too deep into this technology, because you don't have a complete grasp of the situation. The CDI will basically increase the voltage from 12V to somewhere in the neighborhood of 500. The current draw in the system is based on the resistance of the plug, and the resistance and inductance of the coil. The CDI systems use a lower turns ratio coil because this offers a lower inductance. Inductance in a fast system is basically a current choke, because the current passing through it is L*di/dt=V. If you apply 600 volts and close a switch to send current into the coil and 600v is constant and L is large, di (change in current) is smaller.

The energy storage in an inductor is 1/2 L*I^2 (unit is Joules). I term grows at an exponential rate compare to inductance (turns ratio). So basically you use a large voltage to cause a massive inrush of current and discharge this massive increase in energy across the spark plug.

This extra energy is basically an arc that travels from the tip of the electrode to the ground strap on the spark plug. Copper will not last nearly as long as some rare element such as platinum or iridium. However copper plugs are fvcking cheap as sh1t. I replace them on boosted cars every oil change.

You mean for use with the stock coil and distributor?

Yes. IF you want to, you can upgrade your coil if you are running an external coil setup. If you are running a internal coil setup and want something easy, Mallory makes a box that takes in the output of a coil, does its thing and uses an included coil to excite the plugs.

Sounds like a viable option.

well, id much rather just do it once with the individual cop's and be done with it. Should be more than enough to handle it and the AEM unit seems pretty good and i know they are good about standing by their products.

If there are any other suggestions as far as a CDI box let me know but i think for now its going to be the AEM with motorcycle COP's.

They use to have massive issues with their CDI boxes. So many issues they had to pull them off the market at one point.

However I agree AEM does stand by their products. If you get one PLEASE let me know how it performs for you.

Has anyone used the aem twinfire with a aem ems?

almost all the directions seem to show the use of ignitors before the Twinfire box.

Thats what im using. There is no reason for ignitors. The Twinfire can run with ignitors or directly to the EMS which is the way I have mine wired. There is a setting on the Twinfire that you set whether its being triggered directly by the ECU or EMS and the EMS/ECU controls dwell time or being triggered after the ignitor and dwell time is controlled by that.

Works flawlessly. Just make sure the one you get has all the newest internals. If you buying it new from AEM then it should and should work well and last a long time. And if it ever fails AEM will fix it but the newest ones have been proven to last and work great. Strong as hell spark as well. Cant beat the price for a full 4 channel CDI box. Next in line is the M&W and its 4X the price. No thanks.

Anyways you just follow the instructions given and pin your ecu connector for the 3 extra triggers. Coil 1 uses the original white wire that normally runs to the factory ignitor chip to trigger spark. Simple enough to wire to the AEM Twinfire as well. Set the switches where they need to be and go.

are you using a v1 ems? 2ms or 3ms dwell?

&

are you using motorcycle or automotive cops?

ems v1, I cant remember what i was seeing for dwell time. The dwell factor is set on 30. It goes by teeth count in the dwell options. 4.5 tooth max dwell and .05 teeth minimum.

I am using GSXR 1000 coils. Worked perfectly. Matter fact a little too good to the point I was running 34 psi and after it went lean on me it broke a ground strap on the plug and still didnt misfire. lol. I couldnt believe it. haha
