School me on amp knowledge
I want to put in a 2 channel amp to only power my front 2 speakers. What I'm wondering is, does the amp totally bypass the RMS that the HU puts out or is the RMS of the HU combined w/the RMS of the amp? In other words, my amp is 75 RMS per channel and my HU is 22 RMS per channel so will the power to the speakers be 75 RMS or 97 RMS?

Also, if the amp *does* bypass the RMS of the HU, can I somehow tie the RMS of the 2 front spearks the HU *was* powering and instead send all that power to only my rear speakers which are not being powered by an external amp so by rear speakers will be gettin 44 RMS per channel?

Thanks!!

Completely separate RMS ratings. 75w RMS each

And no, you can't combine the power of the HU to send total power to the rears. 22w RMS each

if your saying you want to convert your current 22rms speaker output to rca and then run that to the amp, I wouldnt do that.

hmm, that's what I was planning on doing at least for the amp setup. I thought this was the proper way to do it? Why shouldn't I do it like this and what would you suggest? Just to be clear on how I want to connect them, read my reply below

So the amp somehow bypasses the the watts put out by the HU? I was planning on connecting the HU via RCA cables to the amp and keeping the speaker connections from the speakers still terminating on the HU.

lets start from the beginning, what head unit are you running?

edit: if you want to run a rca off the HU amp, you would need a line out converter

It's a kenwood KDC-MP345U:
Kenwood - KDC-MP345U

I thought all I needed to do was run an RCA cable from the HU to the amp and the amp would amp up the signal going to the speakers.

wait, i think i confused you lol. i'll reply with a better response once i get home.

edit: if your running the rca off the HU, your not going to get the 22rms output from it. that's why when i said

speaker output is different from the RCA output.

you can run the internal amp in the radio for your rears as normal and then use the rca output on the radio to go to the amp. You may need to configure it in the settings, but thats the proper way to do it.

OK so if I have a 75w RMS amp, will it ADD to the RMS of the HU or somehow bypass the HU RMS and only use the RMS of the amp?
