It turns over though. Although ever so weakly. If a battery can make the starter work, does it have enough juice to make a good spark at the same time?

And yes, if the battery is dead, the motor will not turn over or not enough spark to start the car.

Actually, now you mention it, I think I've found the reason why it would bog once in a while, while driving.

Okay, starting it using a Toyota Aygo has failed. Could it be that it was not powerful enough? The Aygo has a 3 cilinder engine. After a few seconds it felt like I still had to start it with an empty battery. Could I have drained the Aygos battery as well?

I do know that something similar happens when you try to start a diesel-powered car using a petrol-powered one. The diesel needs much more power to get it started, and drains the battery of the petrol-car when doing so.

If that shouldn't be the case, what else could be the consequence of an arc-damaged damaged cap?

As far as I know I've rewired the cables correctly now.

Checklist:

- Fuelpump is working, smell gas underneath the hood
- Starter turns
- Coil gives off a spark, albeit a weak one (orange instead of bright blue)

The only thing I can check now is the state of the plugs, but I've seem to have misplaced my sparkplug tool.

Well, I put the NX beside it, and put a sparkplug on the TB to get the revs up while I wasn't in the car, let it run for a while, and then tried to start it again.

It sounded MUCH better than the Aygo. I even got to the point where it sounded like she wanted to fire up, even bypassing the starter at some point (you know, where the engine revs up, higher than the starter turns).

Alas, she wouldn't start though. Next stop, sparkplugs!

Engine runs again, although a bit uneven, and there's a ticking sound coming from one of the EGR valves.

It was indeed a matter of changing sparkplugs, the old ones were fouled as hell. After installing the new ones, she fired up within a second or two!
