I am not specifically car-audio savvy, but I used to design and sell nightclub sound, lighting and video systems for a nationally recognized and respected installation company. Box sales, equipment, expendables, assistance, full-design, or turn-key installations. Big, expensive ones. Like Dave & Busters, Champps Americana, and a bazillion bars and discotheques.

We used to pretty much always over-power our speakers. For instance, if the speaker is an 8 ohm cabinet looking for 600 watts RMS, then I liked to use an amp channel that had 700+ output. Build in some head-room. The speaker would distort, but probably not blow, from too much input. Then turn it down to the appropriate clean level, set the limiter (eq, crossover, delays, blah, blah, blah) and done. But if you clip the amp and send that clipped signal to the speaker (particularly the high-frequency diaphragms) then you can blow a speaker driver instantly.

Even on long runs of 70volt background speaker systems, if I could with the budget allowed, I'd always spec an amp with headroom.

Basically, more power than you need and run the amps at 75-80% all night long, night after night.

If that Bass Tube in this example wants to see 400 watts continuous RMS, then wouldn't getting a bigger amp with headroom (at whatever ohm rating and hookup procedure specified) make sense?

good point shawn. power does not kill speakers distortion does. Dynamic head room is very important in a amp.

You have a bazooka tube that has two 4 ohm voice coils. You can either have a 8 ohm load or a 2 ohm load. You either need to get a amp that can handle a 2 ohm mono load or return the tube for the dual 8 ohm version. Most single channel amps will do 2 ohms.

Should I use speaker wire or power wire?

But, with that amp.

Far left amp terminal (-) to far right terminal on box (-)
Far right amp terminal (+) to far left terminal on box (+)

On the box, connect middle 2 terminals together. Put a small wire in to connect them together.

The middle 2 speaker connections on the amp will not be used.

please remember this is not to produce earth shaking results...I just want a little kick to offset the horribleness of the NX'es regular speakers (which have been replaced with xplods by someone else.)

You will not be happy with a 8 ohm load on a 150 watt amp. The alpine mrp-m500 is a good choice and is around $150.00.

i was pretty happy with the way it sounded wired the way the amp's manual says to do it, so I am assuming it will only get better?

Well I took the advice and bridged it. After some tinkering with the gain crossover etc I have it exactly the way I want it...good kick at relatively low volume. Thanks a lot guys!!!!!!!!!

I was also going to mention that my system is (only) a high-powered head unit driving the four (4) mid-hi's augmented by a small self-powered subwoofer. It is plenty of clean, clear sound for most average folks like myself. Bass heads, audiophiles and youngsters might not agree.

I could have even deleted the two rear speakers, no one is ever back there.

Buddy of mine who is a engineer just developed his own line of amps. He has won world finals for USAC and IASCA many times for spl and SQ. I just listened to his amps and speakers and im into the very very hi-end stuff. His stuff stomps anything we have compared them to. All tested in the same car using the same speakers all scoped the same and using real time alignment. His stuff starts out a very reasonable prices. Let me know if your interested. I gurantee you wont be sorry.

I consider myself a audiophile having placed in worlds myself in SQ and have had super nice stuff at home from Mcintosh, Magnaplanar, Mark Levinson etc.
