Naw its from the days when cd's skipped from tiny bumps, its old man, VERY old, but it looks brand new and still very sexy lol. It was top of the line and very expensive when he bought it.

I don't know where I fall as far as what's 'typical' these days, but I can't be bothered with CD's, and the radio is a total wasteland when it comes to entertainment. My only use for a car audio system is to play streaming audio from my iPod Touch, specifically Pandora, Shoutcast, and downloaded podcasts.

Just give me a simple head unit without all the crazy shit they've been piling on for the last dozen years. No animated dolphins, no simulated concert hall acoustics, and no face full of scattered buttons. All I need is an aux in, a good quality iPod dock to rca cable, and I'm set.

I already have the perfect head unit (for me) in my Miata: an old school Nakamich CD400. Perfect due to its simplicity and ease of use, and perfect because most people have no clue that that plain Jane receiver in my Miata is better than the flash pos they just paid $400 for, which means I can leave the top down in a parking lot, and not worry about it being stolen.

I just scored another Nakamichi CD400 for the SE-R, and look forward to installing it soon.

And when it comes to iPod controls, unless the head unit has an actual screen on it, the best way to control an iPod is.... wait for it.... the iPod itself.

Next time you're in the market for a new head unit, keep an eye on eBay, or better yet, Craigslist, and get something old and cool, like a Nak, or an old school Alpine, or Eclipse.

This is probably the most intelligent post of the day.

Except the dolphin part. I like the dolphin display

Old school car audio will always kick ass. I am in the the car audio industry, and although they are making leaps and bounds when it comes to aesthetics the rest is sub par at best. They cut cost on other things to make it more affordable for the customer and raise their profits.
Ex. Most built in eq's are garbage, it is getting increasingly difficult to find a deck with three 4-5 volt pre-outs. If u touch the deck too hard it might break. Smh. But I guess who can really blame them. A plain screen w/DVD no nav used to be $1500 easy. Who wants to pay that.
