Thread: hidden fuel pump cut off switch

so i have noticed allot of cars being stolen lately. i have known about this for awhile and have not tried it out yet but i will be doing it shortly.

what it is: a magnet activated switch.

why do it?: because you can literally hide it behind your dash board. all you have to do to activate your car is place a magnet over the area were you have the reed switch hidden and the fuel pump will now turn on.

Do you remember certain models of cars, (like the 98 SVT Cobra, IIRC), that had the "chip" that you had to plug in, in order to start the car? You could make a connector similar to this for a few bucks, and put it on your keychain with a quick release clip, or something. The only way to start the car, would be to insert this module into the socket. IIRC, it did more than just fuel cut. It also had the starter kill. I think it was nothing more than a loopback, tbh.

but tekkie. useing this circuit they have on the web site i posted you can do it for anything.....not just the fuel pump. you could use this circuit to interupt the power for the ECU.........not a damn thing would work untill you wave the magnet over the magic area.

I made one about 5 years ago on my old protege. You can wire in a rocker switch and hide it somewhere only you know... I have a tutorial but its pretty simple. I know a couple people that actually used one of the stock features as the switch.

are you talking about simply useing a switch? if so im not talking about that.....way to easy and common for a thief to find a switch connected to the fuel pump circuit. im talking about useing a reed switch (commonly used in home alarms) hot glue it behind the dash board. or just under the plastic covering the steering column. to turn the fuel pump on you place a magnet over the hidden reed switch.

im sure you could. the thing is you need to use a relay in the system. the "reed switches" can not handle much amperage at all so you have to use the reed switch to energize the relay....the relay is what really powers what ever it is you are turning on/off. you can use the reed switch to energize 2 relays or get creative and piggy back a bunch of relays to each other. sorry im not really that great with electric. maybe someone else can step in here. its really not difficult when you take a look at the circuit diagram on the web site.

I read what you wrote and I understand... It's a very cool idea.

Do you have to carry that magnet around with you though? I'd just be scared I would lose it. The rocker was a better option for me.

well if you could find some type of key ring with a magnet on it that would work. there is also plenty of metal in a car so hiding a few magnets around your car wouldn't be hard.

Good idea. Have several magnets in the car.
Location, up to you. Old pin-ball machine parts will work.
If you energize the magnet, with a switch, you can have both systems, with a magnetic ground, to really confuse the issue.

Eclipse makes a great head unit, where you need to have a certain CD in the disk changer, in order to start the car.

Take your battery out every night and use one of a kind connectors, so standard terminals, won't work.

You have to think like a criminal, and then design around the stupid ones.
