That ground wire (if you follow it) goes from the negative battery terminal, to the chassis, and to the thermostat housing. Make sure the connection from the thermostat housing to the chassis is in tact, and you can forget about the rest. You can cut it off if you want, or tie it up and away somewhere.
Alternatively I would take this opportunity to ditch the stock ground all together since it is probably heavily corroded and replace it with new terminals and thick wire. Go from the thermostat housing to the chassis with it and you're done.
