What head unit do you have now? Do you have an amplifier? Do you still have the stock door speakers? Do you plan to change them? How much do you want to spend?

ok, if you really want a rundown on how certain packages do better than others, what it all means, etc, I'll type it out later this evening when I've got a bit more time. It will take you from basic to in-depth which seems to be what you want.

What it won't do, however, is tell you what to buy, tell you how much to spend, or tell you what brand is better than the other. This will just cover the theory, the electronics, and the physics of sound systems. It will give you what you need to know so you aren't dumbfounded when looking at sub/amp/speaker stats.

For $250 max i would wait until you have some more money. I have been doing audio for almost 15yrs and worked at a shop for 3yrs. You can buy the stuff off ebay but do not expect to get what is advertised for the no-name stuff.

The best advice i can give right now is go listen to some subs and amps and find out what you are looking for as far as sound and volume. Then start piecing things together as you get the cash. The most important part of a stereo system is the install, make sure you have the right power wire, RCA's, a superb ground, and most of all a properly designed enclosure which usually takes making one or having one built.

$250 is a tight budget, but you could probably get a simple subwoofer setup if you look for deals. Read around on this car audio forum. There is a ton of knowledge there. Also, like squirlz said, don't be afraid to build you own box.
