Thread: A Little Tech Tid Bit On Starting Your Project Motors

Ok I did this today. Is this safe with so much liquid being put into the cylinders? 5 ounces per cylinder is a decent amount.

I put in 4 ounces per cylinder but that still seemed like a lot. Anyhow I did the procedure as Miko listed but something must have gone wrong. Some of the oil came out the exhaust manifold. One of the cylinders was on an exhaust stroke.

I'm hoping that oil does eventually seep through to the crankcase. Right now there is a puddle of marvel oil on the top of my pistons. That puddle really worries me about hydrolocking.

Read the procedure carefully, if you did then you shouldn't be worried.

If there is any remaining oil, turn over the motor with starter. This must be done with spark plugs out, also please put a large towel over the spark holes to catch watever remaining oil might be left. Do this for 5 sec. Once done put motor back together and you are ready to go.

This is not really a secret, every motor builder I know has done this on motors that sat. Every motor I have gets an ounce before getting stuck away for winter, then another ounce before I fire it up in spring. It is great stuff. You can even mix it in your gas now and then to help pull moisture from the fuel system and so on. I don't see using a ton of of in each cylinder, but it does help.

The puddles drained. Miko was spot on with the waiting a day.
