Putting gti-r rods and pistons in a de block?
I searched and couldn't really find much. I want to put gtir rods and pistons in my de block.

What all is needed to do this? Any special machining needed? This is a pretty budget build, trying to stay around $800 or so to completely rebuild the engine. Minus the machine work. I will be using all Nissan parts, and hoping to make 400whp very reliably.

Any more info on the topic is greatly appreciated. I know the stock sr can handle the task, but I want a bit more reliability. I just broke my other engine after almost 3 years of boost.

Here is the breakdown of parts.

Rods and pistons- $160 used
piston rings- $80 local
Rod and main bearings- $100 new clevite77
new main and head bolts- $60 ish
front and rear main seal-$20 local
cometic head gasket- $78 local
water pump- $65 local
H/V oil pump- Already had this but $200ish
misc.,oil, coolant, tranny goo, cleaners, and tune up parts $100

I will pretty much reuse everything else. I do under stand there could be more expense, but I don't want to count the rods and pistons. Cause some don't think they are nescesary. We will see how it works out.

Thanks Ken

As far as I know the only difference should be that the rod and rod bearings have more oil holes in them. I believe the installation is straight forward without any need for machining or anything. I'm not as familiar as some though, so I'd wait for someone else to chime in.

isn't the GTIR rod and bearing 1 mm bigger than a DE?

R rods are 19mm not 17mm. I'm not sure if you have to do anything to the crank for this, but you need to make sure you get the propper bearings to go with it.

I know if us R owners want to put none R rods in the block we need to machine them for the bearings, so with that in mind it seems that you would have to do some machine work to get proper mating of the R rods on a none R crank.

But I could also be very wrong.

You could always do typical DET rods/pistons?

I have already purchased the gtir rods. I may just take them to the machine shop and see what they say.

Now when you say it is 17mm vs. 19mm, is that the circumferance, or the width at the bottom of the rod? I will check on that in the mean time and let everyone know.

Thanks guys

break it down on where you are spending the 500 at. this including machining the block and head and honing ect? or 500 just on parts?

$500 on parts only, machine work will cost around $350 or so.

you could have gotten forged pistons and rods for that then, the eagle rods arnt expensive at all...if nothing i would have at least invested in forged rods, stock det pistons are good for around 400whp depending on your tuning... thats just me tho
