Thread: transmission identification?

So i went to my local pick and pull for some subie parts the other day and came accross a pretty rare sight for up her in canada. A 98 200sx se-r, popped the hood and sure enough sr20 powered. Noticed a couple small things like poly mounts, header, pop charger, then i noticed the trans had cooling fins on it.
thinking it was a p11/b15 trans i got kind of excited and was planning on grabbing it until i noticed it was non lsd. Were the p11/b15 trans the only ones that came with cooling fins on the trans? Is there a spot on the trans that might have the trans code engraved in it that i could reference? Car must have come from the states as the cluster was in mph.

Now i did do abit of research trying to figure out what it came out of when i stumbled accross a motoiq thread where they were using a p11 non-lsd trans as the gears from qg18de gears are the same and easier access for replacements parts,(qg18 are plentyfull up here) they also swapped a nismo diff in. So i'm trying to figure out if it's worth grabbing this thing and possibly doing the same as them sometime down the road. Swap a diff in and have easy access to replacement gears if and when i do strip some, Lol.

Also i got a mint arm rest out of it, I know those are fairly rare. If anyones interested in it pm me, maybe we can work out a deal.

A revised exterior transmission case did grace these cars in the later cycle. The case was redesigned with the NZR n15 pulsar came out with the SR16VE engine. It is quite possible that the later US or Canada models got them. The 1999 Infiniti G20 has these update case design but still a 32-series gearstack inside.

Yes you can use QG18 gear stack to swap into the 70 series transmission. (not the older 32 series transmissions)

They added cooling fins to the 98-99s, but otherwise it's the same old thing. This post has some good pictures of a 98:

Here's a nice comparison of lsd vs non-lsd and B13/B14/P10 (RS5F32V) vs B15/P11 (RS5F70V). Basically if you can get a good look at the drivers side axle seal, you can tell which one it is:

Dope. I just was in the presence of John having him tune another car of mine. Smiles all around. He makes the cars so much more enjoyable, it is insane. I have John to thank for the cars that I have tuned by him, that contribute another factor into my "smiles per gallon" when I am piloting those cars tuned by him.

referencing these photo's, I think the trans in question is a 32 series non-lsd unfortunately. I may still go grab it as it could get me out of a bind if/when my 2 32series lsd trans let go. Lol Atleast get me home from the track. Thanks for the info! Dave

If you do, grab the drivers axle with it. The passenger axle is the same, but drivers side must match the transmission (lsd/non).
