Thread: Dry start only in the morning or cold weather?

Hi! one of my cars a 00 G20t started doing a dry start noise every morning some times it last 2 to 5 seconds, I would like to know what could be the cause, could it be the oil pump? Or something else? I know that when I turn the key on on position the oil light is good, and when it makes the noise the oil light wont go on or flicker,like it used to hapen to another car I had. Can any one pint me in the right direction. Engine is the factory engine and have 201k miles on it

I think I know what sound he's talking about. Sort of like a unlubed metal on metal noise for like a hot second during a super cold start. i got an all stock NX with 95k original miles on it that does it sometimes. I wouldn't worry about it too much (if the noise it a quick couple seconds) I've had a couple SR20 cars do that. I've even searched this issue quickly finding its nothing to be concerned about. As mentioned you could check the tensioner, although in my experience you can hear the tick of the chain off the guide when its running when the tensioner is getting worn out (and its usually on the older Nissans and highports with the older style tensioner. I think 00 G20 might already have the newer style. If it does I dont think they have the guide in there anymore either.) If the noise is limited to a second or so during cold starting and the tensioner (not a hard job to swap it) doesnt solve it, i wouldn't worry.

Where are you located? You said it just started happening? Is it a lot colder out than it was before it started doing it? Thing is all the oil drips to the pan and you start it up, its gonna take a moment for the oil to get up and lube the engine so I'm not sure what you could really do to solve it. Again this is assuming its the sound i think it is.

Started on mid December, and Im located near Cleveland Ohio, I haven't had any time to work on it or check the car lately because of the crazy weather we've been having, but I haven't used the car to much either (probably once or twice a week at max) but as soon as I get some time and a warmer weather 50°+, I will check into that.

I'd try 0w30 in the winter if it's mainly a super cold weather problem only and nothing else mentioned above presents itself as the issue (aka - not the timing chain tensioner)

It could be air inside one or more of the hydraulic valve lash adjusters. Bleeding them is the solution, but it's such a minimal problem I never bother unless I already have the cams out.
