There should already be a relay for the fuel pump. OP said it was an NX, and I know the B13 Sentra had a relay for this.
It's entirely possible that there is corrosion on the pump wiring that's in the tank, or since the pump was previously swapped, there could be some bad connection that has oxidized causing excessive current draw.
