It would be interesting to take this for a spin in an actual car with a working speedo and see how the two numbers compare for accuracy and stability around down. I'm still not sold that GPS based speedo will be terribly accurate.

I do though, definitely applaud the effort and technical skill in getting it to this point. Well done!

I'll post some videos/pics as soon as the GPS module shows up (should be sometime this month)

@jimbo_se-r , The arduino application can easily be modified to utilize other means of speed measurement. Like if you have ABS, there are 4 sensors on each wheel. It would be as simple as splicing into this signal, and feeding it into the arduino.

If you want to get really advanced, you could do a combination of GPS/ABS sensors. GPS for more accurate measurements, and a failsafe, reverting to speed by ABS when no GPS sattelites are in reach.

The cheapo china gps module arrived:

It works really well, gets a signal really fast, even indoors. One thing that is annoying, but not related to the GPS, is the serial interface. Arduino Uno cannot have stuff connected to the RX line while flashing it, so I have to disconnect the module each time I upload to the board.

Here's a screengrab of the maybe most used GPS arduino library, TinyGPS++. I set it to output location+speed in km/h in the serial monitor.

Literally took me less than 30mins to get to this point. The Arduino following sure has a lot of talented people contributing.

I now have all the pieces, but I think I'm gonna try to source a digidash before I install it to my car. If anyone wants to sell one, know somebody that has one, here's my WTB thread: http://www.sr20-forum.com/classifieds-wanted/79711-digidash.html (Mods, remove this if it's not allowed)

nx1600 digi dash?

I'll see if I can score one this weekend for you at cost. Should be around $50 shipped if I can find one.
