Thread: installing cam question

So I'm planning on installing my jwt s4's today. I have a set of jwt cam gears aswell. I was wondering if i should just install the cams straight up or if i should install the jwt cam gears aswell? I've read that retarding intake 2.5* and advancing the exhaust side 2.5* is a good way to.

The cam's will be run along side a T28 and as soon as I get these in john will be helping me with the tune.

For NA applications the cam gears are not needed, but seeing as you are boosted that changes things. Might as well install the cam gears since you have to pull the OEM sprokets off the old cams anyway, and for now you can always set them at 0 if you're unsure about the tune, and work on that later once everything is all fine and dandy.

I ran S3s w/that exact setting to "dial out the overlap" for the turbo setup. Those were S3s tho...I have also read that S4's were better straight up.

Here we go again with misleading information lol. How did you conclude that Na setups don't have the need for cam gears? I'm very curious mister lol. I'm 100% percent sure that all the fast all motor guys would disagree with your statement.

Theory is only going to take you so far. What I would do is the following: install the cams with the cam gears straight up and take it to the dyno and do a base run. Then i would play with the cam gear settings and see what the motor likes. There's no such thing as a generic setup, all motors are different. Yes those settings might give you a good starting point, but you would still have to play with it at the dyno to actually see the gains or losses.

And I've been working on these cars for 16 years+ - cam gears don't make much of a difference in NA bolt-on cars. I've had them.

Cam gears shift the powerband, they are useful in any engine if you wish to change when the powerband occurs. (but they are not the end-all, be all to the powerband, more things affect that than just the cam timing gears)

Sure, but for for N/A cars, I don't think they are necessary. Also depending on the JWT cam in the car it might already have some advance and retard built in. The S4, S5 already are built with that in mind. The S3 might but you aren't going to gain much for the hassle for a NA car. Now turbo you can gain a decent amount to make it worth it.

Cam gears do not affect power "gain", only power "delivery".
