Thread: Whare are the symptoms of a bad transmission mount? (AND LESSON LEARNED INSIDE)

what looks like what happened is the bolt on the right worked itself all the way out, and the other bolt was left with all of the load being exerted on it. that coupled with these loose rubber bushes gave some play where the crossmember was bending on that one bolt, eventually fatiguing the metal to the point of failure

edit: im wondering if this bolt was already gone when you let your friend drive the car, it might have contributed to his sloppy driving and the failure

Im having trouble lining up the trans mount when attached to the cross member. When the mount is in its location, it appears the rear part of the cross member can't line up because it's too far away? And when you put the cross member bolts in, then the mount is too far away..?

So basically, 1 crossmember bolt fell out, now all weight it on the other bolt....which then snapped the crossmember. That's what it looks like to me. I've launched cars with slicks many many times and never had a failure even close to that.

Yep, I'm sure you guys are right. Now what about my issue trying to replace the new member with the mount? It doesn't seem to line up.. ?

You're going to have to get the rear trans mount in as well as the front mount and jack the crossmember up. The engine sags/rotates without the crossmember in place so you'll have to place it back where it was in order for the holes to line up.

Okay, so I'm not crazy then, haha. I was under the car looking at it all and said to myself, this is physically impossible !

I'll add that it may be easier to get the rear trans mount bolted up first, then jack up the crossmember in the rear and get the rear crossmember bolts loosely threaded in, then line up the front mount and crossmember bolts.

There has always been confusion over the mounts and their locations. Think of them like this; passenger side, firewall, drivers side and radiator.

What a pain in the arse these mounts are
