Everything lines up apart from the oil feed hole for the solenoids.

Thats alot of work just to break in the bottom end and swap it again. Do it right the first time, and you will thank yourself in the end. Ive been almost 5 years boosted and never had to touch anything major. It pays off bro!

I thought I heard something about a headbolt and dowel pin size difference for the GTIR block. Thought the head and gasket holes had to be enlarged. I have never had a GTIR block so I have no personal experience.

I have heard a lot of people say the cometic doesnt last very long. I planned on pulling the head after about 1200 miles to take a look at everything.

Yeah there is a size difference. I have already done the work on the cylinder head. But that reminds me I need to check the hg I have to see if I need to enlarge for the gtir bolts and dowels, its a det hg but probably not gtir specific.

Ditch the Cometic and OEM metal HG.

So the dowel holes for the cometic gasket didnt fit over the gtir dowels. I took it to the machine shop yesterday to see if they could drill or ream it but they said no. They would have to clamp it down because of the multilayers which would ruin the seal. When I get the VET gasket I will have to open up everything; bore, dowel holes and stud holes.... Not sure what to do at this point. I know people open the VET gaskets up, ive seen it multiple times. Its either that or get an expensive one like a cosworth that I dont have to mess with. Im pretty sure I saw that mazworx opens VET gaskets.

That's probably why you don't see too many GTIR/VE setups. Different head studs, Dowel size, Crank flywheel bolts... Hard to believe that it took until past year 2000 to remake that engine (SR20VET xtrail) If I was trying to swap the head over I think I would make some stepped dowel pins in the lathe so I could revert to a newer block down the road in case the block got trashed. Will the head studs fit through the gasket?
