Thread: New member need HELP for identification SR20

Hi Guys,
My name is Bastien and I live in Thailand,I bought a Ford Ranger swap with a Nissan SR20, the serial number of it is : SR20-304135W‏
I don't know the exact model and the year of it?
I have a piston 53J with the head Flat,the rod is : 53J-3 60J41-1 and the block is written with : 65F 1L,distributor is an angle distributor Mistubishi/Nissan 2210065F11;T2T5671.
The rod bearing and cranckshaft bearing number are F-780 STD 12223 60J00;F-780 STD 12111 1M500; STD 12215 60J00.
The top engine cover valve is silver (aluminium normal),the injectors conection are red .
The engine looks to be probably an SR20VE ,because i can look the VVT system on the top (but i am REALLY not sure!)
Actually I would like to rebuild my engine because it is the most simply way and the cheaper way for me in Thailand but I really need to know the model and the year of this engine and nobody is able to give me an answer.
I have already sent a lot of emails to Nissan and several parts provider.
I precise that there is no turbo on this engine,no manifold,but on the pipe air it is written RC turbo (may be had one before...??)

How many counterweights on the crank?

That is a RWD head, so likely the bottom end is a RWD bottom as well, which means it is not an SR20VE. The SR20VE was latitudinal configuration only. RWD VVT engines were still called SR20DE or SR20DET.

It seems to me it is a matter of figuring out if it is an S13, S14, or S15 engine. The valve cover slants in the back and the coil valleys don't look "fat" so that rules out the S13 engines I believe. I don't think the S13 got VVT either. So you have an S14 or S15 engine. I'm very surprised it seems to be converted to distributor ignition from the stock COP. I wonder if the N/A RWD SR20s came with a distributor?

The red injectors hint at it being an N/A RWD SR20DE. The exhaust manifold also doesn't look like a turbo manifold from that one picture.



What are you trying to purchase or assemble that you need to know exactly which engine it is? We might be able to help there as well.

What country are you in so we can help you narrow down where to buy parts? Oh wait, you're in Thailand? How come you're looking for parts on the US eBay site (items shipping from California and Florida)? We did not get the RWD SR20 engine in the US, so most of the normal stuff you're going to find there is going to be for FWD engines only.

All of the kits you've posted will have a FWD oil pump setup, which will not work for your RWD engine. Some other items might not work as well, but I don't know for sure.

I ask about the distributor because I've never seen a RWD SR20 with one. All of the RWD SR20 engines I know of use a coil-on-plug (COP) setup which eliminates the distributor and uses 4 coils instead of 1. This makes me wonder what ECU is controlling that engine.

You are going to be much better off buying parts from a seller who knows the differences between FWD and RWD engines, like @GregV or @Andreas Miko for example. They will be able to help you figure out which parts will fit your engine. There are also tons of items in your engine that probably don't need replacing. You likely don't need new chain guards, nor pistons, nor HVLAs. You probably don't need a new oil pump either. I guess it depends what happened to the engine before though.

I would consider buying crankshaft main bearings, thrust bearing, connecting rod bearings, and maybe piston rings. Then I would buy a valve cover gasket, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, and some spark plugs. Maybe clean the MAF or buy a new one. That would be my generic list of parts to buy on a budget. And I would get most of those parts from one of the good folks who sell around here and ship to Thailand.

It is likely a RWD SR20DE (with VVT). Those were produced for the S14 Silvia (1995-2000) and the S15 Silvia (1999-2002).

I'm hoping someone who knows more can narrow that down for you soon.

I don't have much experience with RWD SR20DE engines so I did some research and it seems they did come with a distributor setup. You can ignore what I said about the ECU. This might also help us narrow down what year your engine is.
