Thread: Silicone removal - engine rebuild

Hi guys,

Just curious what do you use to remove the silicone from between the oil pump/block/upper oil pan/sump etc etc.

Wire brush attachment on a drill? Bench grinder with brush attachment?

Seems a pita.

That tool looks nice, but what about the little grooves? They seem to want some sort of rounded end scraper...

Save yourself some time, Roloc disc:

Drag a razor blade, don't push it. For the hard to reach stuff secure the blade with some needle nose pliers. I've done a few SR20 upper pans before, most of them still in the cars. Never had an issue using a blade and taking my time.

On aluminum I always use a razor with light pressure and for the grooves I use a small screwdriver with pressure and it comes right out. On the lower metal pan I use the wire wheel on a porting tool and it works great. I don't use any grinders or sanding wheels on the aluminum parts because they need to stay flat and they can cut it uneven.

The one that I suggested I have used for 15+ years without a problem - thou LIGHT pressure is important.
