Thread: Starter replacement tips, tricks, anything because this sucks balls!!

Oh yeah, as far as I can tell, I have removed both bolts. The starter is very stuck. I'm inside to warm up the hands, then I am trying the pry bar / putty knife next. Then, bite the bullet I guess.mim out of ideas, whiskey, and patience!

probably the gear in the starter came loose and is stuck on the teeth of the flywheel /housing... Try turning the crankshaft by hand and see if the loosens it up.. if that doesn't work put the bolts in halfway and use a 3-5lb hammer to bang it out.. if that doesn't work reach around and see if the solenoid is stuck on something... last resort go inside finish the whiskey and call it a day. good luck and

I agree. I did some research regarding starters, and I assume this is what happened to me.

I will work on it tonight/tomorrow and see if I can get it out. What would the solenoid be stuck on? I'm hoping if I line it back up with the bolts, I should be able to remove it after getting at it with a hammer!

sometimes from debris/sludge being on there for so long it becomes one with the housing/block, even still a little vibration would break it loose.. if you can try turning the crank (27mm socket) and wiggling the starter...

Replacing the starter tomorrow in my SE-R, I hope I don't run into this B.S. too

I have not worked on the car. I got busy, had a date, and then got crushed by snow so lots of shoveling and pushing cars/digging out neighbors. Will update soon.



The Y bracket is the killer. My issues seem to be rare where the gear on the starter is stuck on the flywheel. I have the unicorn of shitty starters apparently lol. It's not hard, just in a crap spot with the bracket.

Well i hope both of you can get it done w/o punting.
On the ex beater NX i eventually had to remove the trans and bang it out the other side with a small sledge hammer. At 170k miles and >10yrs it was stuck on that bad.
Was pretty much the end for the car since the rear shock towers were made of swiss cheese and i was keeping the clutch, trans and axles before junking it anyway. But still.

@paul p - Yes! Back in the Chi (burbs anyway) for good now. Was commuting back and forth from Chicago and Denver about 1-2 times a month. It was killing me and my wallet. How bad were the drifts near you? 3+ here, and it took me 30 mins to get IN my driveway with the Saab convertible (don't laugh, summer car, and only running car lol).

I hope I don't have to drop the trans, that would be way out of my skill/comfort range. That would SUUUUCK.

Well i tried everything short of heating the joint with a blowtorch. Just too many things i did not want to catch fire. That said, have done 2 other b13s and a 91 Volvo 7 w/o a problem. Had the bolts back out on a BMW 530 all on their own once actually.
If you haven't already, liberally soak the area in PB blaster or Liquid Wrench give it a whack/2 then let it work for a day.





Even after the plow came through last nite it took 15 minutes out of our neighborhood this morning. Narrow streets mean you plan to let people by half a block ahead of time.

For me, got the starter out without much of a problem today except for the fact that its in a hard spot and you have to crawl under the car at points. Luckily for me the previous owner must have removed the bracket, and it's a 98! w00t!!!!
