Thread: Reducing camshaft friction areas

So I've been wondering, a lot of modern cars have a camshaft design with the rear non working area of the cam cut very thin, similar to most motorcycle camshafts.

Is this something that will help on our sr motors? Is it a matter of reducing weight, friction, both? Worth the effort? Are camshafts balanced at all? I haven't really looked to see just how big the contact patch is between the back of the lobe and the rocker face.

it is to reduce weight and friction, both. the cam has to be balanced, yes, like any would need to be. another issue is a stiffer valvetrain could break these cams in an sr engine.

The lobe part that does the opening and closing events woudld have to be left the same i guess like the photo above details? May or may not be worth it. You could save more power by simply reducing the amount of weight your wheels and tires carry in a cost vs performance breakdown.
