Thread: inhibitor relay? or ignition relay? problem

ok i am having a crank issue with my 91 nissan. my car starts up fine but after driving around town and turning off the car. ill go back to leave and the car will not start???
i have to pump the clutch a couple of times with the key turned and then itll start. I have replaced the starter and have changed the clutch switch (neutral safety switch?). the battery is fairly new and the cables are clean. the alternator checks out as good.
now all i can think of is the relay switches. what is more likely the one inhibitor relay? or the two ignition relays under the dash? or is it something else entirely? any advice will help.

I am bumping this post as I am having the exact same problem. Parts replaced are alternator, battery, clutch switch and starter. Car will start and drive, stop somewhere, then not start again. In fact, it acts like the battery is dead. I get no acc on function whatsoever. Zero activity or noise when I try to start. When the key is put in, it dings, but the second I move it forward, it is like everything gets killed. Should I try replacing the relay first before I dive into the ignition cylinder? Any help would be greatly appreciated. A small frustrating problem at a time I really need this car functional.

I would check the IGN switch first. There is not one relay that provides power to the whole car. There are however some circuit breakers, i know the B14s and P10s have them, not sure about the P11.

any luck with this? I am having the exact same prob w/ my 92 NX2000. I had some mice nests in in after 2yrs storage so i just assumed it was bad wire insulation somewhere causing a short or something but i have no idea. The only thing i can add is that sometimes the ignition works all the way to the "on" position, primes the FP and everything, then when i go to start it the starter relay just clicks rapidly. One time i hooked jumper cables up and it started it but died when i took them off. And the Batt had 12.7-13V. Weird. Anybody????this has me screwed as its my only car and its left me stranded twice in the last week and i work two jobs.

Mine does this too I have narrowed it down to heat soak for either the batt or starter. Drove my car a crap ton yesterday and at times it wouldn't even try to crank the longer it set the less time it took till it cranked. Again batt voltage fine let it sit overnight and bam starts up right away. It's not my daily so ilm try to isolate which it is but it may be a while before I have it sorted. Sorry for the long post but that's my $.02

Well I ordered both the ignition starter switch and the ignition relay. Should have them by Wednesday and I can report back. I hope this takes care of it. I have already replaced the battery, alternator, starter, cv joints and brakes this year. It is such a clean car, and I really enjoy it. But all the little problems this year are turning it into a headache since its a daily driver.

Do any of you have aftermarket alarms installed, either working or not? Sometimes people install or have them installed, then remove only parts of it (the horn etc) and leave the start up inhibitor installed because it's more of a pain to remove. Worth a shot to look for any weird switches under the dash.

no alarm in mine, as far as i know it never did. BTW-my car didnt start one day after work after sitting for 8-9hrs, so i dont think its heatsoak

Just to follow up, I received the Ignition Switch replacement yesterday from rockauto (bought the beck arnley version, part number 201-1909). Just replaced it this morning. Took about 30 minutes. New piece fit perfect and car started right up. I snapped a few pics of the piece, including a close up so you can see all the crap that is fouling the switch up. Also, I did not end up replacing any ignition relays.

Lol. I wouldn't Get to excited just yet. Wait a few days first. I have had my egnition switch go bad on me and i didn't have any of your symptoms. The ignition switch wires crack up bad over time because of how the wires are bent. I jiggled that wire while trying to start it and it worked everytime... I never did replace it tho. I took a zip tie and kept it it straight. Haven't had a problem since. But this wire does seem to match the bill on the other guys that posted.

Y'all jiggle that wire going into your ignition switch and see if if it starts..
