After spending way too much time with the wrong pickle fork getting the donor off what's left of Jenny, jacked up Chip and ran into a puzzler. Yes I've heard of the double wrench trick but the knuckle was only held on by the control arm and tie rod. The latter popped with one quick tap, but the big ball, went at that for a good 10 minutes with the narrow fork and nothing. Later came at it with the wide one and it popped on the second swing.

So I'm spinning the tire listening and the noise seems to be coming from where the axle enters the trans, not from the wheel hub. Looking at it a little closer it looks like there is metal on metal contact. As if the trans seal is missing outer rubber/plastic. Going to check part pictures and see what it's supposed to look like. Give it a squirt of grease too and see if the noise goes away.
