Thread: Adding a stock sunroof to a car that doesn't have one?

I can't find much information about this, but I was wondering if anyone has added a sunroof to a car that didn't come with one? I recently bought a b15 and it doesn't have a sunroof, but I figured I could grab one from the junkyard and install it, but didn't know how hard that would be or if it's even possible. I'm sure there's more to it than just cut a hole and drop it in. I'd assume it would be possible, however, as dealer's supposedly install them at the dealership at least on some cars. Didn't know if this was the case w/the Sentras or they came from Nissan already w/a sunroof.

So, any thoughts?

Usually the dealer is installing an aftermarket sunroof - have them on 2 cars and am happy with them. Look for a company called ASC - I thing that is the name of the mfg.

Do you reallyyyy need it? Ive found that sunroofs seem to be more beneficial to the passengers in the car. I noticed I almost never even looked out mine or used it when I had it.
I do know that if you go the cheaper route with an aftermarket one it's likely to eventually cost you more down the road w/ leaking etc.

My .02 is this, I live in England where if it is not raining, its pouring. However if and when the mythical "sun" comes out it is definitely nice to have a sunroof. The only ones that I have known over the past 9 year of living here that have problems leaking are older euro eco-boxes like Peugeots, Rovers and the sort with the occasional '80's to early '90's Japanese cars. If you keep the seals free from organic growth you should be fine. I would suggest either finding a good shell and swap all the stuff over or if really committed to an OEM look and equipment plug and play get the sunroof, headliner and roof skin from a donor car and weld it in.

Personally, I have to have a sunroof. I love the ventilation and something about AC makes me sick after a while. I am still trying to figure out a way to get one in my King Cab D40 Frontier.

I used to install aftermarket sunroofs for a living. I don't think moving over an OEM unit would be the thing to do. It's probably more trouble than it's worth. That said, installing an aftermarket unit, while likely easier, is no small task. I would think very long and hard about if you need to do this.

So, I was thinking about this and I think an aftermarket unit would be fine as well. In fact, I think a non-motorized 'push' sunroof would be enough for me. I just want to have it cracked mainly when I feel like a fancy-boy and smoke a cigar.

Any suggestions for something like that? Or if I'm going through the trouble might as well pay for and get a motorized one? What do you think?

Also, you're right, I'm not sure what's involved with the install. I need to look into this more before I decide.

I was going to add a sun roof to my car once so I cut the entire roof off of one at the pillars from a local wreck yard. I eventually changed my mind and just bough a SE-R a sun roof. I never use it!

It has to be that weird weather where it's not cold but not hot, which happens about 10 days a year to have it open, if you have A/C that is. If you don't have A/C then I can see a sunroof getting a lot more use. And of course it has to be dry out. I think it's more for the passengers.
