Thread: Are we sure regular SR20DE engines don't have piston oil squirters?

He's obviously not talking about the squirters on the block since he has internals sitting on his desk. He must have found something on a rod or piston.

This must be it. Following the lubrication chart in the FSM shows crankshaft>rod>wrist pin> piston> cylinder wall

You are getting really close, and are almost there. Based on my observations though, the real oil path goes more like this:

crankshaft → rod (big end) → piston oil squirter → piston bottom → top hole on rod (small end) → wrist pin → cylinder wall

Talking with Charles on Gnet, he confirms he's been aware of this for some time.

Nevermind. Thats a 300z piston

Ill post the pic back up because I think this is what he is talking about.

i guess this could help explain why its been a strong engine for race abuse

This a connecting rod from an Isuzu engine with an arrow pointing to the piston oil squirter (ignore the red circle). Our rods are almost identical to this rod in that respect. I'll have real pics soon.

Here are two SR20DE rods (on the right) from SE-R.net project 200SX SE-R June 1998. You can just barely make out the squirter on the rod in this image. (The rod on the left is some V6 rod that coincidentally also has the same bump provision for an oil squirter.)

Those are relief holes for oil from the oil rings to feed into the bottom of the piston. Another neat feature, but not exactly what I'm getting at.

Out of curiosity I dropped the oil pan on my spare and a bunch of doe rings flew out. I chased them down the alley and ran into the neighbor, he was wearing a clown suit. When I asked him if he had seen the doe rings he laughed and ran off into the bushes. I woke up 4 hours later in a dumpster across the street, in my underwear, wearing a red clown wig. I still haven't spotted any squirters, but the mushrooms I found in woods across the street are fantastic with butter and garlic. Thank goodness for wheelchair ramps.

Ben's definition of 'piston oil squirter' != everyone else's.

It's also possible he's high again.

I did find this:

http://www.se-r.net/car_info/engine_performance_tuning.html

"If you do prep and re-shotpeen your rods make sure that the piston wall oil squirter hole does not get blocked or peened over. This hole sprays oil on the thrust side of the cylinder helping with lubrication and keeping the engine quiet. "

But this sounds like a function for cooling down the cylinder wall, not the piston directly like the DET oil squirters.
