broke front subframe stud. options?
So I was installing my tdmi rigid collars and my cross member collars aswell and one of the studs in the front of the subframe snapped. Both rears came apart and the other front one is looking like it may snap aswell so I stopped to see if I can get some input.
So I don't think those studs are available through nissan, what would be the best way to go about this?
So I'm thinkin drop the whole subframe and peel back some the metal to get at the stud, beat it out and replace with a bolt and nut? If anyone has been through I'd like to now what you did to repair this problem. Thanks for any and all advice. Cheers dave

you may want to try lubing it for a few days. a few times per day.

when your getting ready to take it apart again try some more lube and heat.

i broke one on a b14 once in the front...i ended up welding the subframe in place. it held well.

Damn. Yea I had lubed it for at least a week. I'm prob gonna drop the subframe and see what I can come up with. Hopefully I can cut the frame back and replace it. Then weld the metal back in place. I'll post some picks tomorrow but not much too see. Thanks dave

I did this with one of the rear on my old p11. For the one that is broken, drill it out or easy out it. Pick up either a keensert kit or a timesert kit. I used the timesert. They run around $80. Drill out the welded nut, tap it, then install sert with red locktite. For the other one, get a propane torch and smoke that bitch. And be sure to only use a wrench or ratchet on those bolts. And do not use a helicoil. For one, you will have a hard time finding the right one, and two it will never hold like a keensert or timesert. This isnt a big deal man. You will get it right.

do you mean the stud that is welded to the body snapped?

shit...your gonna have a hard time....only solution is to cut that section out, then weld in new from a donor car..

post above me...

i dont think your suggestion will work if it is in fact the stud for the subframe

Yeah you are right, I thought he was referring to the shouldered bolts for the cross members. Best of luck OP, let us know how you fix it.

I snapped one of my sub frame studs too. After looking at repair options I decided to weld my B13 sub frame in.

The way I looked at was; if I'm ever in an accident bad enough to damage the sub frame the car is totaled anyway and I'll have to move my parts to another body.
If I ever really need to I could probably cut/grind through the welds but I can't think of a reason to remove the sub frame.

On the plus side it definitely tightened the front end.

The studs aren't welded in, they are pressed in with a spline the same as a wheel stud.

Chop a hole in the side of the leg, give the stud a hit and it will come out, then you can get it out of the car.

You can put a donor stud back in pull it through then stick a tack weld on it to hold it there.

Yes, I beleive this is the route i'll be taking. The only problem I have is going to be getting a donor stud from another vehicle. I live in canada and these car's are not easy to come by. Especially one where the same thing isn't going to happen when I try to take the stud out of it. Im putting this on hold till I can figure out where I'm going to locate a new stud, Lol. Thanks Dave
