Thread: Transmission Fluid Leaking Out Of Passenger Drive Shaft...How Do You Fix It?

Hey guys,

Recently, I had a transmission installed on my manual 99 P11T and a few days later I noticed a puddle of fluid coming from the tranny. Today I decided to take a look and it's coming from the passenger side drive shaft. There is a small gap between the drive shaft and the transmission and that's where it's leaking. My neighbor said that since it's not completely going in it could be that my drive shaft needs to be replaced. Any ideas?

I also noticed that the mechanic who was installing it did not completely tighten one of the mount bolts. From the passenger side drive shaft looking up there is a bolt that goes into the mount and bolts to the engine. He used the wrong size or couldn't put it on completely since it is sticking out. Would I need to secure the motor or tranny before I remove that bolt and reinstall another one?

its the axle seal just remove the axle and replace it.

Axle seal. Was the seal replaced when the new transmission was installed?

No, but the drive shaft is not flush with the tranny so wouldn't that keep the seal from being pressed in like it should? Or do I just need a new seal? Also, is the seal a dealer part? Because my local auto parts store can't even order it.

When the axle is in all the way there is still a gap.
If the axle carrier bracket is on then it is in properly.
More than likely the seal either needed to be replaced already,or was damaged as they put the axle in the last time.

I always replace the axle seals when I have the trans out just to make sure since the seals are cheap.I usually order them from gspec.com but I have bought them at local parts stores before...not sure why your local store doesnt have that commom part
The key is to not mess up the case removing the old ones....and make sure the seal is only in until its flush with the case,or it will leak.(VERY IMPORTANT)
So many people want to push them in until they stop...this is incorrect.....and yes its stupid of Nissan to not make the case so the seal stops where it needs to be,but thats Nissan for you

Thank you both for your help!! Would a flat head screwdriver be all I need in order to pull out the old seal?

yes that may work.You will have to determine that when you get in there to do it...I have done it in the car,but space is a little cramped when the trans is in the car...I usually do it with the trans out.
The key is to not scar or scratch the case where the seal seats when removing the old seal.

I think that I see the old seal slanted to one side, so getting it out should be pretty easy. Thanks again for the help!!
