Thread: Is There An Easy Way to Get a Broken Axle Out, Without Taking the Tranny Apart??

Been awhile since I've been on here. Just got the car up and going again finally. Went to the track and ended up breaking the driver's side axle in the tranny!

Curious to know if I really need to take the tranny out and dig in to get the part out.?!?!>,

Can't you just pull the pass. side axle out and punch the driver side out from the pass. side hole?

/\/\/\ What he said. the inputs for the diff go straight through, so you should be able to just punch the broken axle out from the pass side.

thats crazy, usually its the passenger side axle that breaks being its the main drive axle. Hmmm interesting, yeah you should be able to just pull the oposite axle and use a long screw driver to punch it out. should be nice and easy, lol

Don't forget that it is held in by a circlip, so it will take a good rap to get it started.

BUUUUUUUUTTTTT. i also broke a driver's side axle at the beginning of this season. had to take my B15 trans all the way apart, then take the diff apart and punch the axle stub out.

let's just say that now would be a good time to replace any worn trans/clutch/flywheel parts.

i tried for days to knock the stub out by taking the passengers side axle out, let's just say it doesn't work. there is very limited space to get something through the diff. by the time you get something thin enough to make it through, it's not strong enough.

^ thought so from what I remembered.........taken my tranny out wayyyy too many times!

Only other thing I have come up with is to drill and tap a hole in the end of the broken piece and put a bolt in and slap-hammer is out of there. Worth a shot I believe, only thing that sucks is collecting all the metal shavings from drilling and tapping.

Well how far inside is the axle broken off? Did it break off flush with the transmission housing? Basically all the spline section of the shaft is still there? I would think you've got a good idea there in that you could just tap it, and use a slide hammer to extract it. That, or put a bolt strong enough in there and pry it out against the head of the bolt, like you'd normally pry between the body of the axle and tranny housing.

have you ever tried drilling into an axle? i'm guessing not. it's like drilling into another drill bit. it's hardened metal, so it's pretty impossible. if it is possible, it will take forever.
