Getting tired of my car
Its holding me up from getting to work, and anywhere else...Moms not all there and doesnt do anything for me....So i need some help

93 Se
-jdm de
-all the sensors were switched except the knock sensor.
-timing is around stock
-no vacuum leaks

-tps set at oem
-3 different mafs so far

problems:

First start of the day, always impossible, cranks and tries to fire up, cranks fires up dies. the only way i can start is if i hold the pedal half way down, and then it backfires like crazy, it will hold an idle about 10 mins after sitting with a rough idle.

40-hour into driving it, it likes to die, i drove about 25 miles, messed around on some corners, i push in the clutch after and it dies...

starting is then damn near impossible again

any ideas??!?!??!?

please help.

Check your injectors and fuel pressure. Check your plugs and gap. Sounds like its running rich.

Have you messed with your cams at all? What gets me is the backfiring issue, theres obv enough fuel to get it started with even partial throttle, but it backfires, which would tell me theres something up with your timing. Check your timing again..

Yeah check timing and make sure the crank pulley is giving the correct timing marks.

If the crank pulley is off ( meaning the center piece has seperated from the outer piece ) you'll think the timing is set at like 19 degrees and you go to back it off, but it may be set at like 15 degrees, so you'll go to back it off and send it too far back to where it stumbles and backfires n such.

Sounds like a timing issue.

check if the plugs are on the right pattern. does the car sound remotely healthy after it idles fine?? and you're obviously getting spark but maybe not enough on start up. to me, it sounds like something electrical. and if the motor and everything was fine before it went in, it's something stupid. check your fuses as well (might as well check if anything is burning up)

k last night, installed a different distributor, and redid the tps, it was off a little bit and would bog right when u floored it.

took it out once it was warmed up, pulls like every bit of the power is there.

thats the thing it had new plugs, check the wires to make sure they were open enough, everything, i cant find it..

going to go work on it now in 110 degree heat lol.

see if it starts easy now.

Also make sure the spark plug wires are where they are supposed to be ( i.e #1 plug wire in the #1 distributor cap etc )

and it starts fine, WTF, and when i drive it, it acts the same as if ive been driving it for a while, cant idle

ugh this thing bugs

gunna go mess with it some more

Sentrixx's thread was an eye opener about the crank pulley potentially separating and rotating slightly, could definitely mess up what your idea of the actual timing is. Try messing with the distributor position and see if that changes anything in terms of making it easier to start, and if you've got a spare crank pulley around slap it on (yeah PITA) and check to see if the timing marks are where they were before.
