Thread: electric speed sensor wiring

does anybody know how to directly run a pigtale from the the electric speed sensor to the cluster.. if i remember correctly theres 2 wires on the cluster a green and red or something of the sort that i can splice into and make my sensor work


only reason i am doing this is because i have had alot of trouble with this 1.6 to 2.0 swap and being a 94 didnt make this a easy task for me... the old harness that i was using did have the plug for the electric speed sensor but none of my gauges worked so i had to use a harness from a diffrent year and it did not have the electric speed sensor plug for it.. please help!

Rob (Toolacpfan) is the only person that I know that successfully did this wire conversion when he did the analog to digital cluster swap. The downside was the speedometer was off and got worse as you drove faster.

Okay.. heres what I know...
These speed sensor are not interchangeble to get accurate readings...
1. Only Manual Speed sensors can be used with a Manual Tranny. And the same goes for Automatic.
2. Only Electronic Speed sensors will accurately work with Electronic clusters. Same for analog...

So, you cant make an electronic cluster use an analog speed sensor. Nor, can an analog cluster use an electronic speed sensor.

If you have a Manual Tranny, you must use a Manual Speed Sensor.

Summary: You need a Manual Electronic Speed Sensor, because your Cluster is Electronic. Right???

91/92 cars: Looking at the FSM, the 2 Speed sensor wires from the cluster are one Yellow wire and one Green wire.

93/94 cars: harness appears to have completely different color setup--
Speed Sensor..............To Cluster
Blue...............................Green
Blue\Orange Stripe............. Red

So, what years are your harness & Speed sensor??

also im my stock GA16DE CLUSTER.. and im using a 5 speed electrical speed sensor.. the cluster was made for electrica speed sensor but it use to be a automatic and now its a 5 speed...which now i have a 5 speed sensor to match the tranny.. now i just need to know if theres a way to run it without the sensor plug and run it straight to the cluster

Jensen never reads... He has a copy of the FSM that I gave him... Still no read!! Maybe he has a reading disability!! A-D-D.. Did he ride the short bus to school? hehe..

I will wire it up tomorrow Jensen. Make sure to have the cluster loose, so I can get behind it. I will also need a couple good lights... I just hope a GA16DE cluster works like the SR20DE cluster... We will see...

Just have the car at the shop.. We will work on each others cars... Packed my car tonight! Will find pads at this end...

Keo.. Whats the best street brake pads for my NX? The front brakes on there now is a dusty mess... and the rear ones are done... Ceramic, metalic, semi-metalic??
I would buy some Nissan Blue pads but i probably can get them from u tomorrow morning. Let me know....

Scotty, check the mini install thread.

the GA16DE cluster should work fine, remember the Digital Dash is from a GA16DE and many people have ran that into a SR20 car.

SCOTTY why are you making me seem like i have never told you this information before?? we talked about this on the phone plenty of times before this post was made...

if its a electirc speed sensor then it has to be 93 1/2 to 94 because thats when they switched.

i dunno how many times i stressed that my car was a 94 and you know that...

and i told you that i was going to use a pigtale harness using the other harness that i had....

i guess the only way this can benifit is for others who might want to help... other then that there you go....

oh and scotty... the fsm file i uploaded does not work the files are there but when i try to open them they computer says the file does not exist or some stupid message..

We hard-wired the Speed sensor to the Speedometer cluster harness.
Made up a new harness (bypassing the main harness) with a plug for the speed sensor at one end
and hard-wired the other end to the Cluster Speedometer harness.

Using a matching Speed sensor plug (pulled from an old harness), we made a new harness
using about 3 feet of Red & Green spare wires (also pulled from an old harness),
Then fed the new plug wire thru the firewall,
Stripped the Green & Red wire at positions 6 & 7 of the speedometer cluster harness,
And finally taped off the connections at the cluster harness.
Reconnected the Cluster for a test drive before sealing all of the connections.
We had a few hiccups with the plug connections but resolved them by testing the wiring with the good ole DVM.

Jensen now has a working digital Speedometer ! !
He now knows when he's speeding !

In the process of fixing the speedometer, the head unit stopped working and the dash clock is blank.
The head unit wiring is probably a missing ground somewhere in Jensen's messy maze of dash wires...
And the dash clock harness is probably not plugged in all the way..
Simple fixes Jensen...
