The Oil Leak Thread
Starting this thread because I have been chasing an oil leak for over a year on my NX and I think I finally may have found it.

Show us your oil leaks from past and present...and what you did to find them and fix them.

Over the years, I have had the oring on the distributer leak, and the valve cover leak, and the rear and front main leaks....I have had the oil pressure sensor leaks....and we have all had the Powersteering leaks from EVERYWHERE.
I have had axleseals leaking, coolant hoses on the back of the block, etc, etc, etc.

But this one is new.I have been trying to see where this oil is leaking from with no luck up until now...
I basically got the car up in the air and cleaned all the oil; off with brake cleaner and let it dry.
The started the car and crawled under it to see whats up.
I looks like I have a leak at the oil filter mount-to -block location. Theres 2 meteal washer/o-ring type seals in there. Apparently mine are no good. I did remove the bracket tonight and found one oring damaged enough to possibly cause the leak.
So off to the dealer tomorrow AM to try to score a couple seals.
I will post my findings.

This freaking oil leak has been driving me nuts since I daily drive the car. If this fixes it ,I will be soooo happy. Its the only thing left on the NX that needs attention mechanically at this point to be perfect.
I had been suspicious of the upper pan ,,so I am glad I looked a little harder before tackling the shitty job of resealing the upper pan with the engine in the car.

I've been chasing a leak for 5 years. I cannot for the life of me catch it in the act. It's either the oil pan, either or, or FMS. FMS looks ok around the pulley though and I've done the pans SO MANY TIMES even trying to cut my own gasket AND following RTV instructions to a T. I gave up, lol! When I track her I just wipe the pan of any drips when nobody is looking prior to pit tech. Hehe!

Looks like I'm not the only one here will mysterious oil leak problems. I've been trying to find mine for about 3yrs now and this Spring I'm determined to locate it. I don't daily the car, in fact I hardly drive it at all so it sits most of the time. Initially I thought it was the crank seal. I've changed it TWICE and still oil is coming from somewhere. It doesn't show up right away after cleaning everything up. You have to drive the car around for a couple of days and recheck. Last time I dug into it I found it coming in the area of the upper timing cover. It's not the Valve cover gasket. So that only leaves 2 other places I believe. Either the head gasket where it covers the timing chain cover or it's the cover itself that is leaking from ontop. My next step is to take out the passenger side mount and bracket and find this leak once and for all. Coming from the convention last year my oil pressure dipped and when I checked it I had lost about a quart or so. So I need to find and fix this if I have any plans of driving it to the Convention this year.

I had to clean the engine off repeatedly with brake cleaner while on ramps, then just let it run and keep looking around. Fortunately the VE has high oil pressure when started initially so that may have helped.
I did the same with my xtrerra and I actually saw the drip start in front of my eyes

Oil feed line to oil sensor spot for me. I was dumb, kept toppin it off (1qt/wk) for 6 months. Had thought it was the lower pan since it dripped from a certain corner every time.

After I had resealed the pans, I looked underneath with car on, (open dp, very loud) it was the line but before I had gotten to fix it, one of the rods bent.

update.
I ordered brand new orings, installed them.
Same leak. It basically started leaking right away when I started the engine...leak is in the same spot so I guess maybe my orings werent bad after all.
I am thinking the filter mount must be cracked?
I had to drain the fresh oil out and take it all apart again. Everything LOOKS good...but theres obviously still a problem.

Waiting on another mount from a member here to see if it solves this...dammit this is becoming alot like work!

yeah, well tedious is a good word for it...I was pretty confident that the orings was gonna fix this it just stinks having to drain the oil take the filter off,and then theres a PS bracket that has to be removed to get the filter mount off.
None of the bolts are easy to get to.
I also removed the passenger axle to have some room to work though.
