Getting rid of drone -- where to put sound deadening material?
Hi,

I'm getting old and w/that comes getting rid of my annoying drone coming from the back of the car. It's that real 'bassy' drone from the 3" exhaust like a sub-woofer going all the time.

Where's the best location to put the stuff to cut down on the noise? 2 possible places: trunk or behind/in front of rear seats?

I don't want to go crazy and put it all under the carpet and stuff, I only want to reduce the drone and keep it to easy to access places.

Anyone w/experience in doing this have suggestions on where to place it?

Thanks!

Are you sure it is droning and not a loud exhaust? Putting down dyno mat/ fat mat will change the resonance of the vehicle. Honestly, it sounds like a new exhaust system is in order. What size resonator and what muffler do you have?

Trunk has those relief holes in them, right? That would be a good start. I would think doing the trunk floor would get rid of most sound.

It's always been like that. 2 resonators and a magnaflow muffler. Doesn't sound very loud from outside the car or if you see it on the street, but really bassy inside the car at certain RPM ranges.

Sounds like a plan. I'll update on how it goes. I think I'll start w/the trunk.

That is called resonance. The key issue is the exhaust frequency passes range that matches the resonant frequency of the chassis. Like I said though, adding dyno mat or fat mat will change the chassis resonance, but you may get droning at a different rpm. The problem is your exhaust. I can say from experience, a single larger resonator will be better than two smaller ones. However, many things contribute to drone, pipe size, type of metal the exhaust is made of, muffler type, resonators...

You want to start in the trunk and behind the rear seat. This will help keep the noise down. Get rid of one of the resonators and add a 3" cat, it will help. May i also suggest a new muffler, i do not think the Magnaflow's are that quiet, i love my Dynomax VT, very quiet unless you get on it.

Try wadding the material up and sticking it in your ear holes.

hmm, well, if the drone switches from something other than highway speed RPM ranges then that'd be great

hmm, maybe be an option if the sound deadening material doesn't help.

I actually considered wearing ear plugs while taking the car on long distance trips lol
It's the worst thing about the car when driving on the highway. Everything else I can tolerate.

Original owner of my SE-R didn't like the drone of one of the aftermarket mufflers he put on (first Stillen then current Borla), so he laid down some mat directly over the muffler. He said that did the trick.

New resonators, add a cat if you don't have one, new muffler. Larger volume of muffler in the chamber will keep it quieter.
