Thread: 1995 S14 Silvia sr20det ticking

CAR: 1995 Nissan Silvia
ENGINE: SR20DET

PROBLEM: Loud ticking/knocking when running. Sound is intermittent when running. Ticking/knocking would happen for 10 seconds, fade out for 1-2 seconds and come back

PARTS REPLACED: We have replaced the timing chain tensioner. This "improved" the ticking as to where it is constant now. Tensioner was fully extended and pressing against chain after install.

One thing we did notice, was a groove that looked odd on a shaft that spun or gets spun by the exhaust cam. Not sure that has anything to do with it.







Any help would be great, trying to get this car ready for a car show next month. Thanks

have you tried un plugging the VTC solenoid? if not...do so. if the ticking goes away after...then the VTC cam sprocket needs to be changed for a new one. if you buy a new one... try to get one from a S15 sr20det. new or used form a S15 will work. they are a revised cam sprocket that doesn't tick when worn out. just a little history...S14 VTC cam sprockets are notorious of ticking noises when worn out. generally the noise goes away when unplugged. mine at the moment is making a slight ticking noise. yours is the loudest I have ever heard if that is what it is.
