Thread: loose and sloppy stock shifter (not linkage bushings)

I have a stock shifter. My shifter feels very loose. When it's in a gear, I can move it around quite a bit. I can make a full circle with the shifter it's so loose. It's been getting worse over time and has gotten to a point I need to fix this.

I've pretty much replaced every bushing on the linkage system including the one below the shifter assembly. I think it's something with the actual shifter ball or some bearing the ball sits in.

Anyone ever come across something like this? Any ideas what I need to replace?

Looks like pivot ball is worn out. This seems pretty rare. Haven't read of this happening to anyone else. After 180k miles I guess it wears down like anything else plastic. Replacing w/Ebay shifter.

I think the other options are that the linkage is somehow bent or the transmission itself has play. Will update once I get the short shifter in.

Maybe get under the car and watch the linkage while someone wiggles the shifter around? Would help tell you if it's in the tranny or on the shifter end.

Careful with those ebay shifters. I tried one once. Decided to have a fun run with an RSX and the shifter snapped clean off the ball when I hit third and sent my hand into the hvac controls lol.

I did that. Both the stick and tranny shifter was moving. Not sure what that means. I'm not sure which side is the loose side. I'll start with the shifter. I have no idea how I'd fix it if it was the transmission. I did notice the shift lever on the transmission has roll pins holding it on, but no idea how to install it or even if it can develop slop. I'll worry about that if the shifter doesn't fix my issue.

The ebay shifter is 80% to diagnose my issue and 20% to have a short shifter. I liked and didn't mind the stock shifter. Well, if this one explodes/breaks, I'll look into something else.

Replaced the shifter w/en Ebay one. Still have the issue, so it's not that. Found out it's the dual-welded cross bushing that attaches to the shifter arm on the actual transmission.

It's the thing at the bottom(to the left) of part 34103:

The problem is that you can't seem to just buy that bushing..you gotta buy the entire bar. Anyone know of a replacement bushing for this piece? Perhaps a bushing the exact same size/dimensions but for some other prat of the car?

wow a bunch of people having the same issue at the same time it seems.

I can' think of another bushing on the car that is the same or similar size. I'm thinking of just pulling it off a low-mileage car the next time I'm at the junkyard. This design is the same on Maxima's, Altima's, and including all GA16 b14/b13's.
