When my '91 SE-R lost its speedometer function last year, I looked under the hood and noticed transmission fluid around where it engages in the speedometer pinion / transmission. Took the cable out of the pinion, reinstalled and tightened it up. It worked for about a half-mile before stopping again. When I got home, I took the cable out again and noticed that the "tooth" that engages the pinion had rounded off. That would be a good thing to check before doing any cluster work - for me it was just a new cable and everything was right as rain.
the working for about a half mile is what mine is doing, but i noticed mine is what it seems like popping out of the back of the gauge cluster, i can reach up from under the dash without pulling the cluster and clip it back in, and after a bit of driving, it will just drop to zero

the odomoter and speedo do not work when this happens, the trip odometer actually extremely slowly turns backwards, kind of like christine, oddly enough the car is red also!!

to me i think the 93' NX and 93'-94' SE-R cluster is the best, i like the newer layout, with the electronic speedo and the clock still built in to the cluster. for some reason, when i went from my B13 to a B14, it drove me nuts not to be able to see what time it was directly in front of me.
