Check your and throttle body and tps output. Sounds like they are out of adjustment. The ecu thinks your foot is on the throttle so it will continue to supply fuel.

Normally when your foot is off the gas pedal in gear, the tps output will be .45-.65 volts. The ecu will then cut fuel. If the tps voltage is higher than that, it will continue supplying fuel and you will get a run on/accerlation.

Ok I will try adjusting the tps position, and check with a multi meter.

Has the car recently overheated? Where was the temp gauge when this happened?

Only asking because this happened to me in my B13 when the head gasket was about to go after I had gotten on the throttle (over 6500-7000RPM) and then got off the highway and came to a stop. It kept going "Rrrr uhhh RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrr uhhh RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR uhhh" sorta, haha. There's name for this but I can't recall.

The temps inside the motor got so hot that even with the engine off (just accessories on) it wouldn't shut down completely because of whatever fuel was leftover inside had to be burnt due to the high temperatures, but it settled down and the tach slowly dropped and then shut off.

It is scary I agree. I would lean towards what the others were saying, just wanted to throw this out there.

Check the little screws on the butterfly valve too
