Engine keeps accelerating when NOT on gas pedal!
'95 200sx se-r manual

After a few minutes of driving and the car has somewhat warmed up, the engine will continue to accelerate when I take my foot off the gas pedal. When this happens, I have to press the clutch so it is in neutral and the revs go up to redline and then it immediately dies back down to idle. The pedal does not seem to be sticking, it comes back to normal position. The throttle body does not seem to be sticking when i turn the throttle manually. This is a dangerous issue. I was told it could be the idle control valve?

Thanks in advance.

loosen your throttle cable a little, throw some wd40 on the TB spring and pull the IACV and clean it out with break parts cleaner, then put it back on and see what happens.

I once had a throttle body break on me and it was stuck at WOT. the peddle was not stuck though.

could be the throttle cable also

I would start by inspecting the throttle body to make sure that it is closing all the way. If you have data recovery tool (scanner) see what duty cycle % the idle air control valve is operating at. Also, inspect engine for vac leaks and well as the brake booster for a vac leak - using a smoker will make finding a vac leak easy. Any MIL codes present?

Does this happen at a stop. For example, start your car in your driveway, let it warm up to operating temp. Bump the throttle a bit and see if it raises to redline like you said on its own.

I've got $10 on IACV. The ECU has to meet certain conditions for idle to be set properly when coming to a stop. I suspect that since the IACV is open 60%+ while driving, it is getting stuck when the pedal is released and the vehicle is put in neutral.

I replaced that part (with one from a p11 g20) and I am still having the issue.

If that were the case, why would it drop back down to idle after it hits redline? Wouldn't a stuck throttle or cable make it stay on and keep hitting the rev limiter?
