Throw out bearing direction + sticky pedal
Hey guys, pulled the gear box to do a 5th gear pop out fix and installed a new clutch while I had it out. I bolted it all back up last night and first thing I noticed was the clutch pedal not coming back as it should, very slow and sticky to return.

I feared it may happen as the new clutch disc was hard to get onto the splines and move up and down the shaft (tried while the box was still on the ground). Any one had something like this happen to them before? Possible simple reasons for a slow pedal return?

The next thing was once it fired up and you stand on the pedal there is a horrible screeching noise. I'm wondering if I put the bloody throw out bearing on wrong? Does someone have a picture of which direction it's supposed to go?

The round bearing part will press against the pressure plate.

Did you replace the Clutch Release Bearing Clips ?

Did you clean the sleeve/snout that the CRB slides on?

Dud you lubricate the sleeve/snout that the CRB slides on?

Only seen happen with cheap Ebay and knock off parts

CRB backwards is a possible cause.

Are the transmission bell housing/engine block alignment pins both installed?

Noise could also be from the 5th gear repair.

Your throw out bearing is on backwards... ask me how i know....


Make sure your clutch cable is adjusted properly. This also causes a sticky pedal.

No but they looked ok

Yes and Yes but perhaps not enough (I was too scared to over do the grease)


Only seen happen with cheap Ebay and knock off parts


Genuine Nissan Clutch kit

No lubricated shaft - clutch cable sticking/worn out.


The cable was moving freely in its sheath

Are the transmission bell housing/engine block alignment pins both installed?


Yes both dowels are still in place and slotted in

Noise could also be from the 5th gear repair.


Had a very reputable gear box shop do the work inside the box which included new 5th set plus new diff bearings. The noise only happens with the clutch pedal depressed

No but they looked ok


Always replace them - they are only like $3 ea.

Use a quality synthetic lube - you will know if you use to much. Using KY, Astroglide or hair oil will not work. I had a roommate use the previous once so just don't ask.

You might need a new Pressure Plate from your noise now.

Ahh. Only when the clutch pedal is depressed. Sounds like the bearing is installed backwards. Hopefully they did a pre-load when replacing the diff bearings too.

Well I feel epically stupid. The throw out bearing was on backwards.

Unfortunately in the minute I had the car running it has done a fair bit of hurting. The bearing is toast, the plastic(?) seal on the back is wasted and there is some evidence of heat damage on the pressure plate fingers. I will pick up a new bearing tomorrow but the pressure plate will just have to make do as is (I've run out of funds). Clean all the burnt plastic off of it and hope for the best.

As for the sticky disc, Nissan NZ is sending me a new one tomorrow.

I'm getting preeeeeeeetty good at taking the box in and out.

a freely moving clutch cable does not mean it is not worn out, a heavier pressure plate will cause it to be sticky if it's already somewhat worn, just fyi

It looks even worse than that. Plastic from the seal melted and made a mess.
