I'd get a Consult cable off Ebay. Easiest and most reliable way of getting into timing mode, plus you can do a bunch of other stuff w/the cable.

Yea - that's the key: Making sure that the ECU is in timing mode. Like Gomba said, the most reliable way to do that is with a consult cable, laptop, and appropriate software. If you have specific questions once you get into this, the Forum members can answer then for certain.
