Thread: Spinning Metal Noise...possible bearing?

Alright guys so if this problem has been brought up please point me in the right direction. My 91' NX2k has an odd noise coming from the passenger side of engine bay. I only hear it when I press the clutch and when the car is in neutral it comes and goes...it sounds like a spinning bearing, like an old phone ringing or metal spinning against metal. I don't notice any symptoms of anything just the noise. anyone have any ideas so I am not ripping into places I don't need to?

Does it sounds like a bunch of quarters and dimes and stuff being shaken in a metal jar? Where is your idle at when this happens? Do you know where your ignition timing is set at?

What happens if you come to a stop w/ the clutch pushed in but the shifter is in 1st gear? Will it only make the sound when you pull the shifter in neutral?

I am leaving for work right now so I will keep a closer eye on all that AND to be honest I haven't messed with my timing or checked it in 4 years soooo

Ok so my idle does a steady roll from 750-1200. After paying closer attention the noise seems to happen when I press clutch while I'm in 1st and sometimes 2nd NOT when I'm in neutral, at least not as often. I am unfamilier with timing adjustment...any threads I can look at?

For timing adjustment all you need is a Timing Gun (Pep Boys, Autozone should have one for less than $25) and a socket set if you need to adjust it (believe its 14mm bolts).

The timing gun has two wires, one attaches to the battery terminal to power it, the other goes around the first spark plug wire, and you just point and pull the trigger and look at the pulley markings to see where it's at (while the engine is running) You rotate the distributor towards the cabin or away from to raise/lower it by loosening the bolts.

I'm not sure how we went from a spinning metal noise to adjusting the timing, but here is the correct way to adjust the timing...

As far as the noise I'm thinking throw-out bearing as unijabnx2000 suggested.

im leaning towards tob or clutch you might think its coming from the passenger side but most likely isnt
