hey all long time... axle question, do em both or just the busted one?
hi all i have a 96 se-r and i changed axles about 3 years ago to some chinese crap. agp i dont know. any how my driver side makes a horrible click and if i go fast or brisk enough a howl like a rubbing and it does it straight or turning the car, not bearings i think. well i looked under and the inner boot definatley let go of the ghost and i can see the grease all over my suspension, well caked and old at that. now i found another axle on rock auto but the question is do i do both now or can i do one now and the other in a couple months? shop says just replace the bad one but dont they usually crap out one then the other shortly after. i guess i could check the boots on the other side and if they never toe buy me a little time. well just wanted you alls opinions. take care and thank you!

edit: it is a gsp axle and now im being told they only make them for the 1.6 3 years later. wonder if its the wrong axle and poor car suffered... gsp 2.0 part number is for a nx2k thats why she couldnt find it

How did you manage to fit the 1.6 axel to a lsd tranny?

To answer your question its like changing anything that comes in pairs, if you change one youll have to change the other. In some cases you dont but its all up to you. its a chance your taking if you only change one not that its a bad chance.

p.s. i once fit manual raxles into a auto car. it didnt go well but drove it like a few months that way, she shook like hell. if there is a way to mess it up i will:-)

I just actually did both my axles on my B13. One went bad, wasnt sure which (as both had severely ripped open boots). Long story short I bought the car with the boots ripped. Car hadnt been driven in awhile and i drove it home 5 hours, first 2 no issues, last 3 with at least one really bad axle. My guess is on the drive back from the hours of heat with the dried up grease had it shit the bed. Since i didnt investigate which one went bad and wanted to change them both eventually, i just did them at the same time. I've been having good luck with the Duralast Remans and noticed when putting them on under the black there seems to be the OEM green so hoping they are in fact OEM remans.

Anyway, as far as doing them both at the same time the only real benefit (as far as the work goes) I could see would be already having all your tools out and car jacked up. Personally if one side isnt given you problems might as well let it ride until it does. Thats just my opinion but like Lp said, its more so up to what you wana do. I had a passenger side in a 96 SER (i since sold) that had a bad passenger side axle. Changed it and the rest of the time i had the car the drivers was just fine, never gave me issues......so really just up to what you want to do.
