Thread: Weird Issue with charge and brake light comming on and off

Couple weeks ago the charge light and the brake like would come on at the same time flicker and shut off. It's happening more and more as the weeks pasted, it would come on and I would rev the motor and they would shut off only to come back on and off again. Since the battery was old I grabbed and Red top and took it to my friends shop to check the charging system. Everything checked out fine so I swapped the new battery in, drove it home with no light coming on. Drove the car today and the lights kept flickering again on and off. It's annoying to say the least and if I have an issue I don't want to kill my new battery. Why would both the lights come on at the same time? If I had a alternator issue wouldn't just the charge light come on?

If you look at the wiring diagram of pretty much any car you'll find that those two dash lights have a common point that leads back to the alternator.

I.E. - You need a new alternator. Yours is slowly dying.

Perform a battery/starting/charging system test. Most likely an Alternator failing.

That was done on Saturday everything checked out fine. Of course the lights didn't turn on or off during the test.

Possible voltage regulator starting to fail in the alternator. If it is intermittent then perform the test several times, specifically when the light is flashing.

Alt. or voltage regulator. Either way, the charging system needs examined.
